As our ancient ancestors grew in consciousness into human beings, they began to connect with the natural world around them in a deeper way. They saw in the sky two celestial companions - a constant never-changing sun, and the luminous moon, which diminished and grew in time with a woman's own cycles. Over time, myths and legends associated with the moon changed, but her primary association with the feminine has not. The triple crescent moon symbolizes the three aspects of a woman's life - Maiden, Mother and Crone, as well as the three fates - the ''weird'' (from ''wyrd'', meaning fate) sisters who control one's birth, life and death. The crescents are bound together by a full moon, the never-ending circle embracing all parts of the whole.
